Mice in your house?
Somewhere around 14 million people reported seeing mice in their homes in 2021. It’s no surprise that this is the case because these little critters can jump up to a foot, swim, climb, and fit through openings the size of a dime. Mice are commensal, which is a fancy way to say that they live close to humans because we provide a food source and warm shelter for them. They sneak into a crack in your foundation or into your ridge vent and make themselves at home eating just about anything they can find. More than that, they start making families at an alarming rate. Each female mouse can produce up to 14 babies in each litter and she can give birth 5-10 times each year. So, we can see how a large infestation can happen quickly!
How do you know if you have mice in your home?
If you suspect you have mice in your home, here are some things to look for:
- Droppings–mice can leave up to 100 droppings per day.
- Holes in food packaging or chew marks on wooden baseboards or doors
- Grease marks on baseboards or walls from a well-traveled mouse path
- Mouse Nests–balls of ripped paper, strings, fabric or stuffing from mattresses or pillow
- Scratching noises in your walls
How can you remove mice from your home?
A little preventative work can save you a lot of hassle later when it comes to mice. Make sure all food items are in sealed containers and that there are no obvious entry points. However, if you have seen the tell-tale droppings in a drawer or your pantry and have tried your best to remove these pests from your home, we suggest calling a wildlife professional. We have a number of qualified companies that we can refer you to that are great at preventing, deterring, and protecting against mice. Once you’ve decided which wildlife removal company to hire, these trained professionals will look for all possible entry points for the critters and make plans to remove any current mice and mouse-proof your home to avoid re-entry.
