Squirrels in your house?

Squirrels look so cute when they are jumping and playing tag in the trees. However, these critters will take advantage of any areas in your home they are able to chew through. They will chew their way into attics, soffits, eaves, or even walls. Once inside, these little bushy-tailed fellas are bound to cause a significant amount of damage to your home. Whether they are stuck or building a nest, the squirrels will do their best to chew through just about anything to get where they want to go. This includes, but is not limited to, insulation, any sort or wood of plastic that might be in the way, and electrical wiring. Fire hazards abound…not to mention the unsanitary latrine they will inevitably use your home for.

How do you know if you have squirrels in your home?

If you suspect that you have squirrels in your home, here are some things to look for:

  • Odd noises in your home
  • Chew or bite marks – Squirrel teeth are always growing. They chew to keep them from overgrowing.
  • Shredded home materials – They use this to make nests, or just to get to where they are going.
  • Strange odors or feces in the home – They will use your home as a private restroom, so it may start to smell a bit off.

How to get a squirrel out of your house?

Some preventive measures can be taken to help keep squirrels out of your home. Rule #1 of squirrel control is: don’t feed the squirrels. They can forage plenty of food for their survival and tend to return their food “sources” ...i.e. your home if you are feeding them. Also, trimming trees around your roof line will help keep them from jumping easily onto your roof. If you have done your due diligence, and still are having squirrel issues, we suggest hiring a professional Wildlife Control Operator who is trained and licensed for this type of work. We have a number of qualified companies that we can refer you to for help. However, a simple internet search will work too. Once you’ve decided which wildlife removal company to hire, they will begin the process of removing the squirrels and begin to formulate an exclusion and remediation plan for your home. This plan will include squirrel removal and a home seal-up to prevent future squirrels from making their way back into those entry points. It will also include a clean-up plan for any mess left behind.
